Coral are millions of tiny animals that make limestone homes. The animals are called polyps. Corals come in different colors and shapes. Coral polyps live with each other in colonies. Coral polyps can form buds. They make hard skeletons in their own bodies. Malachi-Ben-Karissa Corals eat small or tiny animals. Corals use their tentacles to grab tiny sea animals to eat. The tentacles can freeze or paralyze its prey. The coral paralyzes its prey and freeze it to eat. Tamilyn-Brylen-Randy E Coral needs warm shallow ocean water, sun light, algae, food, and protection! They need clean sea water. If you take them out of the water they will die. Do not make jewelry out of corals and no giving corals any harm at any time. Follow the beach rules! Jasmyn-Jim-Kainoa The life cycle of the coral is - first it fertilizes eggs that will change into small swimming organisms called planulae. Second, the polyp finds a place to grow. The gametes come together then they are fertilized. After the planulae finally go on a surface it grows into polyps. A coral can reproduce in two different ways. The top part of the polyp change into a dome shape and it turns into a stomach and a mouth. A bud is one of the new polyps that can develop on a body of an old polyp. Rachel-Andrew-Raylin Scientists predict that coral will disappear in 2030. Human activities such as fishing and diving, and bad weather such as earthquakes and tsunamis can kill the coral reef. Motor boats, fishing, nets and chemicals from cities and farms are some of the things that harm the coral reef. The crown of thorns starfish began destroying reefs in the Pacific Ocean. The coral were eaten by the crown of thorns. Eli-Brysen-Chazzy The coral reef is a source of food for fish and other sea creatures. If we didn’t have coral reefs there would be no shelter for the fish. Some fish live their life among the coral. Coral reefs protect the coastline. These are some animals that depend on the coral reefs for homes - black tip reef sharks, clown fish, eels, turtles, lobsters, tako and sea snakes. Birds also eat coral reef animals. That’s why we need coral reefs in the world. Sena-Hayden-Cameron This is how we can protect corals. Never go close or touch coral. Do not take marine life out of the water and don’t step on corals. Volunteer for a coral reef clean-up. Don’t collect corals at all times. Throw anchors in the sand or rocks but not into corals. Set up marine sanctuaries that help ecosystems. Support groups that protect coral reefs. Don’t walk on coral and watch out for reefs. Don’t collect coral and always leave a coral and other sea animals where you find them. Mia-Emily-Kena The EPA - Environmental Protection Agency has groups like ocean survey vessel and the US Reef Task Force that protect the reefs. The National State department has laws to protect corals. Strict laws do not allow people taking or damaging coral. If people do not follow the law of coral they will have to pay $500 or go to jail. People can be fined up to $100 per coral that they take from the ocean. |
