A coral is a living rock of limestone formed by millions of tiny animals called polyps. They come in different shapes and colors. Coral polyps are related to jellyfish and live together in colonies. Kaleb-Christian-Aliyah Corals eat small animals in the sea like small fish. The tentacles bring small animals to the mouth. Corals eat any kind of small fish in the sea. They catch their prey with their tentacles. They catch their prey at night. They eat small fish, zooplankton, bacterioplankton or other food particles. Isaiah-Kiare-Lexi Corals need warm, shallow, clear, clean ocean water. Zooxanthellae live in the corals tissues. Corals cannot exist without the algae. They also need carbon. Kade-Chloe-Mason Some corals start from and float and land on a coral by itself. Corals can live for hundreds of years. When corals die there skeleton is left behind. The upper part of the body becomes dome shaped and develops eggs that develop into tiny swimming creatures. They also settle on a surface. Meleana-Aidan-Kaitlin People use coral to make jewelry. Some boats float over reefs and damage corals. Starfish are beginning to destroy coral. Pollution can make animals very sick and destroy coral. The hooks on commercial fishing line may go on coral and pull it apart. Dredging will pull the coral and it will pull the skeleton apart. When people step on coral it will turn white and die. Maya-Kaimalie-Haydyn Don’t rest anchors on the reef. When you do that you crush the coral. Do not step on coral because it is special. When you step on coral it will die. They like warm water. Taylor-Patrison-Joelynn Coral reefs are homes to many animals. It also provides food. Here are some of the animals that live in the coral reef:
Kia’i-Kepa-Kurtis People are helping by making laws and protecting the coral reefs. If you do not follow the rules you can go to jail for 30 days and each coral you pick you cost you a fine.
