How do birds meet their needs in order to survive?
In the next few weeks we'll be looking at 5 different birds that can be found in wetland areas or near the ocean here on Maui. As we study these 5 birds we'll be:

- talking about what makes a bird a bird (characteristics of birds)
- looking to see what it is about our 5 birds that makes it possible for them to survive here on Maui (adaptations)
- learning about Bill Berry, an Alaskan artist who did field studies of birds to help him make illustrations and paintings (drawing like a scientist)
- practicing art elements of line, shape/form, texture
- implementing art principles of pattern, proportion/scale
- examining how the wing structure of our birds enables them to fly (lift)

- Make a field sketch notebook for your bird - warm up with 2 contour drawings of your bird in the notebook (2 minutes each)
