What have we learned about honey bees?
2017-Mrs. Fusado and Mrs. Suzuki
The Honey Bee Magnified
We went to a website that showed different parts of a honey bee shown through a high powered electron microscope. But first we looked at a picture of a honey bee eye and described what we noticed in the picture. Then we tried to guess what it was. Finally we went to the website and looked at more honey bee pictures. Here's the website: http://www.rose-lynnfisher.com/beepage.html (click 1 time) Take another look Let's look more closely at a honey bee. Look at the honey bee using the eyes of a scientist and get ready to draw the honey bee using the eyes of an artist. What are the main parts of the honey bee? What shape elements can we use to make those parts? http://www.arkive.org/honey-bee/apis-mellifera/image-A18941.html Dance of the Honeybee - http://thekidshouldseethis.com/post/46937771628 Science Kids - Inside the Hive - www.sciencekids.co.nz/videos/animals/bees.html Kids Learn Why Bees are Awesome - video.nationalgeographic.com/video/news/150815-kids-bees-pollinators-farms-vin Amazing Bees - http://amazingbees.com.au/bees-for-kids.html We read What is an Insect? by Susan Canizares and Mary Reid. Then we looked at honey bees. Are honey bees insects?

What do you notice - What could this be? - It's the eye of a honey bee!
Mrs. Schmidt's class
What I Know
Bees make honey. (Brianna) The queen lays the eggs. (Denia) Bees have a stinger that stings people and it will hurt a lot. (Brie Ann) Bees have a little bit of fur/hair. (Kailee) The queen bee lays the eggs in the holes and in a few minutes they change. (Evan) Only one bee can make the eggs. The queen bee (Jasmine) Bees get nectar from the flowers. (Sammie) Bees live in a hive. (Blake) Only one bee could have a stinger - male or a female. (Sachi) |
What I Want to Know
Why do people smoke the bees? (Teuila) Why do bees sting? (Kaimana) Why do people eat the hive? (Jaden) Why do bees have wings? (Aiyannahrose) |
What I Learned
Only the females have stingers. Bees hibernate in the winter because it is cold. Queen bees lay eggs. The girl bees, or the worker bees, make honey for the babies and royal jelly for the queen. They feed the babies. The worker bees give food for the babies. The boy bees, the drones, help make the eggs. The workers use their wings to keep the babies cool. The bees have hair on their eyes. The bees go on the flowers to get pollen and nectar. The queen bee lives for 4 years and the worker bees for about 7 weeks (I think) and the drones live less than the rest. |
Mrs. Ambrose's class
What I Know
They fly. (Tehzion) They make honey. (Breanna) They get nectar from the flowers. (Kyla) The pollen sticks to their fur. (Chancen) Bees live in honey combs. (Noah) Sometimes they sting when people bother them. (Sofia) Honey bees get honey for their bee hive. (Kala'e) A honeybee has a stinger. (Rose) Honey bees have black and yellow stripes on their bodies. (Audrey) A queen bee lays the eggs. (Xynalynne) |
What I Want to Know
What does a bee's body look like when it is up close? (Serenity) Why do bees get honey or nectar from flowers? (Emma) What do bees do at night? (Leimakamai) Why do bees sting? (Sena) How do the bees help the queen bee lay eggs? (Anna) Do bees sleep at night or do they work? (Sebastian) Do bees eat other bees? (Kamana'o) Are bees helpful or harmful to a garden? Why do bees have black and yellow stripes? (Kingston) Why do bees have stingers? (Penelope) |
What I Learned
The girl bees have stingers and the boys do not. The bees can help the flowers by pollinating it. The queen bee gets to eat royal jelly. The worker bees get to live for about 4-3 weeks. Once the boy bees help, they die. The girl bees, the worker bees do almost all of the jobs. The girl bees, whenever they go to the flower they put pollen on each flower. If the bees didn't put pollen on the plant it wouldn't grow fruits or seeds. The girl bees work hard for the babies and the queen. The boy bees help the queen bee to lay eggs. |
